Sears Workers Approve New Contract – Lockout to End
Employees of Sears at its Vaughan, Ontario warehouse voted on Friday strongly in favour of accepting a new collective agreement. The vote comes after an eight month labour dispute between the massive retailer and its employees, members of the United Steelworkers Local 9537. Sears locked its 500 employees out on April 1, 2010 in an attempt to weaken the collective agreement.
The new contract will run until March 31, 2013 and includes a wage increase, a cash bonus for all employees, a wage reopener clause effective on April 1, 2012, strengthened rights for employees to access to union representation on the job and a faster process to resolve grievances.
